G’s Pizzeria truck offers made to order pizza near the beach in Marquette

MARQUETTE — A family-owned pizzeria has parked a food truck near downtown Marquette for the first time this summer.

There are eight G’s Pizzerias throughout the state, but this truck is their first location in the UP.

Taylor Engebretson is operating the truck while on summer break from her studies at NMU. She’s always been passionate about the family business, so when this summer’s fairs and events were canceled, she saw an opportunity to open up shop across from the beach on Lakeshore Boulevard.

“When I was 12 I started working in the restaurant,” Engebretson said. “My stepdad struggled in the summer to find cooks that were full time, so he’d be like, ‘Hey, you want to come make pizzas tonight?’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, let’s go!’ So I would, at 12 years old, be making pizzas, and they were going out to people on busy Fridays and Saturdays. And I just loved it. Then my brother got this to go to the fairs, and every year we would do fairs together. But this year all his fairs got canceled, so here I am doing it again.”

Part of what makes this truck so special is that all the food is made to order from scratch. G’s even has their own secret recipes for everything from the salad dressing to the pizza crust.

Engebretson says the community’s response has been great so far, and that people seem excited to have an out of the ordinary dining option during this unusual summer.

“I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and say, ‘Thank you. We appreciate you being here,'” said Engebretson. “And honestly that makes me feel so good, because I know people are also excited about how good the food is. So it’s been very rewarding and we’ve felt very welcomed. We are family-owned; the whole G’s business is all in the family. There’s no franchise whatsoever. And I think that’s important, having a family business.”

G’s Pizzeria is located on North Lakeshore Boulevard between Fred’s Rubber Stamp and Lakeshore Bike, who Engebretson would like to thank for their help and cooperation. G’s is open from noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday until classes resume in the fall.
