Benishek bill protecting Sleeping Bear Dunes advances
A piece of legislation created by Congressman Dan Benishek to protect the Sleeping Bear Dunes is continuing to move forward.
The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Conservation and Recreation Act was unanimously passed by the House Committee on Natural Resources earlier this week.
Benishek’s proposed bill would designate more than 32,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as wilderness area. More than half of the lakeshore’s natural features would be preserved while protecting roads, historical structures and access to recreation.
The right to hunt and fish in the designated wilderness areas *is* protected in the bill.
The bill now moves to the full House for a floor vote; it has not been scheduled yet. A similar bill passed the Senate last year.
