HOUGHTON — The Houghton Police Department are investigating a 6-vehicle property damage accident that happened on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2018.

Vehicle traffic was stopped to allow a ship to pass through.

The bridge then reopened and the congested traffic stopped quickly on the south end of the bridge.

A total of 6 vehicles were involved in multiple rear end accidents on the south end of the bridge.

The accidents remain under investigation with the Houghton Police Department.

Houghton Police would like to remind everyone to remember to not follow too closely to the vehicles in front of them as this is one of the leading causes of accidents.

Assisting at the scene were the Hancock Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
