Huskies set to face Lakers in Houghton

HOUGHTON – The Michigan Tech football team is 5-0 halfway through their regular season schedule. Four of their five wins came on the road. The Huskies close the season with four of their last five games at home against some of the top teams in the GLIAC.

Michigan Tech takes on Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon at Sherman Field. The Lakers are having a down year by their standards. GVSU is currently 3-3 through six games.

This game could and should go down to the wire. Two of the last three meetings between these two teams were decided by seven points or less.

“We have to play 60 minutes, start fast, and finish,” said MTU head coach Tom Kearly. “Our ability to get explosive plays. It’s very hard to drive the field on them offensively. Defensively, we have to keep the ball in front of us and tackle well.”

“They’re the premiere program in our league they have been. They’re the program with four National Championships, they’re the program everyone else would like to get to. We’d all like to get ourselves one National Championship and they’ve got four,” added Kearly.

“They have great team speed and they use it to their advantage,” said Huskies starting quarterback Tyler Scarlett about the Lakers. “They make you beat their athletes and it’s tough to do when they have good athletes like they do. They’ll stack the box and make us beat them with the pass, you know, beat man coverage.”

“It’s huge having them at home,” said MTU defensive back Brett Gervais. “Obviously you have an advantage. You have your own crowd here and you’ll have the elements up here. We’re hoping it’s going to be cold, windy, rainy, and I don’t know if that will take them off of their game, but it makes us feel a little bit better about it.”

Last season, the Huskies suffered a 49 to 3 loss to the hands of the Lakers in Allendale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Michigan Tech has won seven consecutive games dating back to last season.
