Island wildfire still blazing

LAKE MICHIGAN- Firefighters are still battling an island wildfire that started late last week.

A 10–acre fire flared up last Thursday on Poverty Island and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are still working to manage it. The fire may have ignited from one that was extinguished earlier this month.

The B–I–A says they are receiving help from the U.S. Forest Services, who are providing a helicopter.

The only structures on Poverty Island are a lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, both of which are vacant.
