Wildcats sweep Central Region honors
MARQUETTE — The Central Collegiate Ski Association announced Monday its Central Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year and Northern Michigan University swept the awards podium.
NMU junior Felicia Gesior was named the Central Region Female Athlete of the Year while sophomore Fredrik Schwencke was named the Central Region Male Athlete of the Year. NMU head coach Sten Fjeldheim was named both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.
Schwencke won the Central Region title in the classic race before going on to be an All-American and capture the NCAA Championship in the men’s classic race.
Geisor finished third in the Central Region in the classic race and was fourth in the freestyle race while also advancing to the NCAA Championships where she was 13th in the classic race and 16th in the freestyle race.
Fjeldheim guided both the NMU men’s and women’s program to a sweep of the CCSA Distance Championships and the NCAA Regional Championships while coaching Schwencke to his National Championship. Earlier this year, Fjeldheim was named CCSA men’s Coach of the Year.
