Granholm Proposes $134 Million in Cuts
Michigan’s recent wave of budget-slashing is apparently not done with yet.
Governor Jennifer Granholm is proposing $134 million in cuts from this year’s state budget.
She’s told the state House and Senate Appropriations Committees about this, and she calls it a first step in addressing the challenges posed by the soft national economy and the struggles of the auto industry.
But NMU, Michigan Tech and Lake State can breathe a little easier.
Higher education is one of the areas that wouldn’t be touched.
The plan does call for $40 million in program cuts, including closing a state prison.
The governor hasn’t said which one that would be.
