Hancock School Budget Cuts

Many U.P. school systems are trying to cut costs to make up for lagging state funding.

Hancock is eliminating some staff jobs in the district and cutting the hours of others.

None of the affected positions are teaching jobs.

The school board is making the cuts to try to make headway against the schools’ deficit.

It’s sitting at about $750,000 right now.

The cuts total just under $100,000.

The school system’s business manager position is being cut, along with the school nurse job at Barkell Elementary and a general custodian position.

The evening custodian job at Hancock High School is being privatized, and the hours of the school district’s head custodian are being reduced.

Unaffiliated staff insurance is also being eliminated.
