UPDATE: Whiteout conditions shut down 50-mile stretch on U.S. 2
A 50-mile stretch of Lake Michigan’s Scenic Highway has been temporarily closed due to blowing snow and whiteout conditions.
Troopers from the St. Ignace Post of the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation came to joint decision to shut down a portion of U.S. 2 between I-75 in St. Ignace and M-77 after receiving multiple reports of minor accidents along the highway.
North and westbound traffic is being rerouted off of I-75 through M-123 to M-28. South and eastbound travelers are being asked to use M-28 en route to I-75.
With current conditions producing less than 100 feet of visibility, officials are uncertain as to when the route will reopen. Any updates will be passed along as soon as they become available.
