Government shutdown ‘scam’ reported
It hasn’t taken long for con artists to figure out a way to capitalize on the recent government slowdown.
State Police troopers say several Baraga County residents have received calls from a woman claiming to be with Medicare or Medicaid. She told them that the disruption caused some of their data to be lost – and asked for personal information. She also provided a toll-free number they can call if they have additional questions. The number is bogus, of course… and the woman is NOT from the government.
Police say to never to give out personal information… including your Social Security Number or credit card numbers… to anyone who calls you. If you get such a call, hang up… and report it to police.
