Ishpeming Seniors ride through Lakenenland
If you’ve ever driven down M-28 between Marquette and Munising, you’ve probably noticed some giant iron statues peering out of the woods.
The eighty-some steel structures are a part of the Junkyard Art Park in Harvey, better known as Lakenenland.
It takes about ten minutes to walk through the grounds if you don’t stop at each piece, but for those who can’t make the trip on foot, driving along the trail works just as well.
“Several times a year, we put a group together,” Ishpeming Senior Center assistant director Lynn Bellmore said. “Anybody’s welcome to come along, and we find things in Marquette County because we have the use of the MarqTran. Today is one of those days. A lot of people haven’t been out to this beautiful metal sculpture art park, so we put this together and we have about 17 people traveling today and really enjoying the park.”
MarqTran receives state and federal subsidized funding to help organizations like the Ishpeming Senior Center utilize their services for a discounted price. In this case, it’s just $1. When you combine that with the park’s free entrance fee, it’s easy for anyone to see Tom Lakenen’s land and appreciate all it has to offer.
“I haven’t been here before, and this is absolutely incredible, the artwork, just what this man has done to put a park together for people to enjoy,” Bellmore said. “In fact, I told the bus driver, ‘can we go through a second time?’, and we have gone through twice, just in case we missed something, but just an absolute wonderful place to come.”
The park is open year-round and can even be reached by snowmobile on Trail 417.
