Wildcats ready for spring football game

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The annual Northern Michigan University spring football game is scheduled for Saturday (April 20). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Superior Dome. The Wildcats are also hosting a lift-a-thon on Friday (April 19) evening at 6 p.m. at Vandament Arena. Both events are free and fans are encouraged to attend and cheer on the ‘Cats.

Fans ages 5-13 can warm-up with the Wildcats on the field before Saturday’s game at 1:45 p.m. There will also be a fun instructional mini camp with the football players and staff. Meet in the east endzone and dress appropriately for physical activity. All fans will receive a 2013 schedule poster to be signed by their favorite ‘Cats after the game.

The offense will take on the defense with the special scoring system listed below. Four 15-minute quarters will be played with a running clock. The pep band and dance teams will perform and the 1965-72 NMU Football Reunion members will be honored at halftime. Wildcat Willy will also be at the game. Honorary coaches for the game are Randy Norton from Fox Marquette and Christine Greer the Dean of Students at NMU.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Michigan High School Athletic Association football officials associations are holding an officials clinic in conjunction with the game.

Friday’s lift-a-thon will be a bracket-style competition with teammates facing each other in various weightlifting techniques.

The official radio station of the NMU Wildcats, 100.3 FM “The Point”, will broadcast the spring game live.

SCORING SYSTEM

The OFFENSE can score the following ways:

  • First Down = 1 point
  • PAT = 1 point
  • Play over 20 yards = 2 points
  • Two-Point Conversion = 2 points
  • 4th Down Conversion = 2 points
  • Field Goal = 3 Points
  • Touchdown = 6 Points

The DEFENSE can score the following ways:

  • Tackle for Loss = 1 point
  • Turnover on Downs = 1 point
  • Sack = 2 points
  • Safety = 2 points
  • 4th Down Stop = 2 points
  • Turnover Forced = 4 points
  • Touchdown = 10 points
