MARQUETTE — Rock climbers can get a bit of a head start on climbing this weekend with some friendly competition.

The Northern Michigan University Outdoor Recreation Center’s Annual Superior Climbing Competition will be held on Saturday, April 21st at the PEIF Climbing Wall. There will be a youth division, an adult division, and a new “tween” division.

Preparations are finishing up, as students are creating new unique routs for climbers of all skill levels.

“We’ve got all of our route setters working really hard to hit the 3:00 deadline that I’ve given them for today,” said Joseph Thill, Outdoor Rec Center Student Manager. “After that, we’re going to climb them, assign them all difficulties, and get them prepared for tomorrow.”

Prizes will be awarded to the top climbers. But it’s all about the friendly competition, the competition will be used to spread awareness and help people learn to love the sport.
