Weightlifters show their strength at NMU

MARQUETTE  — Weightlifters at the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site lifted qualifying totals to participate in national events during an intrasquad meet tonight at the Superior Dome.

Deion Fraire, of Colorado Springs, Colo., lifted 100 kilograms in the snatch and 128 kg in the clean and jerk, qualifying him for the American Open with his 228-kg total. Competing at 62 kg, Fraire was also named the meet’s outstanding male lifter for beating his personal best in the clean and jerk by 7 kg.

In the women’s 65 kg class, Isabelle Dehring, of Marquette, captured personal records in all three categories: snatch (60 kg), clean and jerk (75 kg) and total (135 kg), earning her the outstanding female lifter title.

Qualifying for the Junior National Championships were Brandon Tovey of Gresham, Ore., lifting in the 62-kg weight class with a 220-kg total; Kerenn Frazile of Punta Gorda, Fla., in the 48-kg weight class with a total of 100 kg; Madasyn Hofstedt of Cannon Falls, Minn., with a total of 144 kg and Morrigan Webb of Navarre, Fla., with a total of 132 kg, both in the 75-kg weight class.

Athletes also used this event to prepare for the University National Championships, which will be held Sept. 25 – 28 in Albuquerque, N.M.

“The team lifted how I expected they would,” said Coach Vance Newgard. “We are progressing to be in even better shape for next weekend.”
