The CopperDog sled dog race is only a few months away, and the dogs are gearing up for the long run through the snowy woodlands of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

To give the public a taste of what’s to come, and to let kids have a doggone good time, CopperDog is holding its annual free kids’ sled dog rides in Calumet.

CopperDog assistant race director Kim Pici says it’s also an opportunity to meet local mushers and learn about the sport.

The event takes place at Agassiz Park in Calumet tomorrow from 1 pm until 3.

Now its own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, CopperDog will feature its traditional 150-mile race this year, along with a shorter 40-mile race.

The CopperDog sled dog race will take place on the first weekend in March.
