Christmas Tree Fire Safety

The holidays are a time for friends, family, gifts, food and decorations.

However, if you aren’t careful decorating, your house can become a more likely candidate for a fire.

From Christmas trees to lights, seasonal decorations do pose some risk.

Marquette Fire Chief Tom Belt says that keeping electrical outlets from being overloaded, and just keeping your Christmas tree watered if you have a real tree, help the holidays remain memorable for the right reasons.

Chief Belt has a few more tips.

He asks that you do three things: that you not block any exits or doorways when placing your Christmas tree, that you not place the tree near anything that could cause it to spontaneously combust and that you never use candles on your tree.

The Bureau of Fire Services has put together a list of safety tips, and we have them elsewhere on our website.
