BREAKING NEWS: Ishpeming Hematites win State Title

The Ishpeming Hematites have won the Division 7 State Football Championship, with a 20-14 win over Detroit Loyola at Ford Field in Detroit.

It was Ishpeming’s first state title since 1975.

Hematites running back Eric Kostreva had 3 rushing touchdowns in the contest.

Ishpeming took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter, on a 55 yard touchdown by Kostreva.

Detroit Loyola countered with a 28 yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs led 8-6 at the half.

Ishpeming and Detroit Loyola both scored touchdowns left in the 3rd quarter- and the Bulldogs led 14-12 after three quarters.

The Hematites took the lead in the 4th quarter on a Kostreva 3 yard touchdown run, and cashed in on the 2pt conversion on an Alex Briones quarterback keeper, to make it 20-14 Ishpeming.

Loyola drove all the way down inside the Ishpeming 20- before the Hematites stuffed the Bulldogs on a 4th and 1 trap play.

Ishpeming converted a 4th and inches from their own 20 to keep the ball with less than 6 minutes remaining.

The Hematites had to stop the Bulldogs late- and they did, winning the game 20-14.
