Shakeup at BHK Child Development

A huge shakeup is taking place at a children’s education center in the Keweenaw following the discovery of a major financial shortage.

BHK Child Development in Houghton has laid off seven teachers and has accepted the resignation of executive director Mike Poma.

The changes come after the realization of a $1.2 million budget deficit.

BHK board chairperson Gale Eilola said it was Poma’s decision to step down last Wednesday after the deficit was found.

Eilola said rumors that the missing funds have been embezzled are not true.

He also added that despite the layoffs, the remainder of BHK’s employees will be paid on time.

It’s uncertain at this time if more layoffs will be necessary.
