Baraga Truck Fire Closes M-38

M–38 in Baraga was closed for about an hour this afternoon when a pickup truck caught fire.
The driver told Baraga Police that he made the turn onto the highway from US–41 shortly after 1 pm.
As he accelerated up the hill, he heard the truck backfire.
Then he said he smelled smoke after it caught fire.
The driver got out of the truck and tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher that was in the vehicle.
An onlooker ran out from a nearby building with another extinguisher, but the engine compartment was quickly engulfed in flames.
No one was hurt, but the truck was destroyed.
