Coast Guard Admiral Visit

The Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard’s 9th District visits Coast Guard crews and Marquette city residents today.

Rear Admiral Michael Parks met with personnel from Coast Guard Station Marquette at the station this afternoon.

He also got the chance to meet members of the City Commission and City Manager Bill Vajda.

Admiral Parks says the visit is a way for people at Coast Guard Midwest Headquarters in Cleveland to find out what services they can provide for people in Marquette.

Parks understands the challenges Marquette and communities throughout the Great Lakes have experienced this summer.

The city saw four beach-related drownings in July and August.

Today, the admiral recognized the safety efforts that were taken this summer.

He presented members of the Coast Guard with an award for their actions.

Although the station was recognized for its safety efforts, Admiral Parks reiterates the responsibilities beach-goers also have to stay safe when out in the water.

ABC 10 News Now also spoke to the chief of the station.

We’ll have more about the awards and what the recognition means to the station tonight at 11.
