Obesity-fighting pledge campaign

A statewide effort to fight obesity has made its way to Marquette County.

The Michigan Department of Community Health rolled out a statewide campaign a few days ago.

‘Michigan Healthier Tomorrow’ involves a person pledging to lose 10% of their body weight.

Many experts say that’s a manageable amount of weight for most people to lose and that doing so improves physical and mental health.

In Marquette County, the ACHIEVE Team has worked on health programs like this one since 2009.

ACHIEVE is short for ‘Action Communities for Health, Innovation and Environmental Change’.

YMCA of Marquette County CEO Lisa Coombs-Gerou is a co-chair of the ACHIEVE Team, and she says the MDCH provided the group with funding last year for a Michigan Healthier Tomorrow program for young people.

The Marquette County Health Department is part of the ACHIEVE Team, and so is the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency.

The ACHIEVE Team is doing something else soon, and you can find more information about it here.
