Latest drowning victim identified

The latest drowning victim in the Marquette area has been identified.

Marquette police department says the teenager who drowned Friday has been identified as 18 year old Devante Billups.

Billups was one of three NMU students who were swimming at picnic rocks Friday evening.

The other two tried to save him, but eventually had to abandon their rescue attempts.

Billups was recovered about 60 yards from shore in 8 to 10 feet of water.

He was pronounced dead about an hour later at Marquette general hospital.

Today, a white cross and flowers have been set up in his memory.

The city of Marquette police department warns that extreme caution should be used on all shoreline areas of Lake Superior.

They say you should only swim in areas marked specifically for swimming, where lifeguards are on duty.
