Trenary gearing up for annual outhouse races

One town in the Upper Peninsula is gearing up for this year’s edition of a beloved annual event.

The 21st Ever Outhouse Classic is happening this Saturday in downtown Trenary. People from around the Upper Peninsula and beyond are working hard to build their vehicles for the event, which is a popular and extremely unique type of race.

“It’s actually pretty goofy,” said Naomi Cady, President of the Trenary Outhouse Classic Committee. “It’s an outhouse on skis, and they push it down a track of 400 feet. We have seen some crazy outhouses. I’ve seen some done in cedar tongue and groove. I do believe this year we have one with spray foam. We have a lot of different kinds that are coming.”

The race serves as a fundraiser for various projects around the area, including funding a scholarship at Superior Central and improving local playgrounds and sidewalks. The Outhouse Classic committee purchased a building last fall that is now serving as its permanent headquarters.

“We have our building that we just purchased where we are going to be selling all the souvenirs and doing registration out of,” Cady added, “and we also have a lot of vendors that are coming to sell things, we have food. They’ll be grilling right outside.”

Registration for racers begins at 10:00 a.m. The festivities start at noon, with the races beginning at 2:00.
