Snowfall & Winter Tourism
Snowfall across most of the U.P. is well below average, and that’s beginning to affect tourism.
The minimal amount of snow has created quite an unusual winter in Marquette County.
Tourism has been down slightly due to the cancellation of multiple winter events over the last few months.
But Marquette County is already planning on changing a few things for next winter to account for the possibility of low amounts of snowfall again.
Pat Black from the Marquette Country Convention and Visitors Bureau says they’re looking to set up more weekends filled with indoor events, especially athletic events like softball and hockey tournaments, so that they won’t have to rely on snow to bring visitors to the area.
She also says fat-tire biking in particular may attract more visitors for the following winter season.
Although some winter events have been cancelled this season, the Noquemanon Ski Marathon is still set to take place at the end of January.
The U.P. 200 will also be coming in February and residents are hopeful for more snow to arrive by the time these events take place.
