Northern Michigan University hosts “Taco Support Group” to say goodbye to Dia de los Tacos

MARQUETTE — One popular food truck in the Marquette area made its final stops today, and staff and students from Northern Michigan University decided to make the truck’s last day in business one to remember.

Dia de los Tacos has been a community favorite in the area for more than 6 years. Now, owner Mike Walker has decided to move on to new adventures in his life. Dia de los Tacos has been on its farewell run over the summer, making two final stops in Marquette today.

Northern Michigan University hosted a “Taco Support Group” to say goodbye and thank you to Walker and the staff of Dia de los Tacos. Derek Hall, Chief Marketing Officer for NMU and the organizer of the group, says he knew he had to do something to thank Walker for the past 6 years.

“Mike’s been a big part of the community, so I wanted to figure out a way to say thank you,” said Hall. “It’s a big part of who we are in Marquette. He’s been recognized as one of the top taco trucks in the country, and that’s impressive for this little town. And he’s a great guy. We love him, and we’re going to miss seeing him on a regular basis. Just look at the line and the smiles on people’s faces. It’s great to be part of the community.”

Many people from the community lined up to get one last taco this afternoon, including students from NMU who will always have fond memories of Dia de los Tacos.

“I just came out because I knew it was the last week, and I love the taco truck,” said Jake Gatenby, a senior at NMU. “My friends and I used to come every single Tuesday. I’ll miss this place.”

Dia de los Tacos made two last stops today, the first at the University BP where the Taco Support Group was held. The taco truck’s final stop was for dinner tonight at Blackrocks Brewery. Dia de los Tacos will certainly be missed by many.
