Column names NMU one of the worst colleges for free speech

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University has been named one of the 10 worst colleges for free speech by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

FIRE cited NMU’s former ways of dealing with students suspected of engaging in discussing self harm with other students. Northern changed their policies on that last year.

The university is also currently under investigation by the Department of Justice concerning a complaint that was filed three years ago by an unidentified student about the school’s policies and procedures on self-harm.

According to FIRE, 92% of all American colleges maintain speech codes that either restrict or can be used to restrict free speech.
