UPDATE: Names released in fatal stabbing

UPDATE — 6:30 p.m. May 24, 2016 (EDT)

Police have released the names of the two men involved in a stabbing early Friday morning in the City of Marquette.

Authorities have arrested and charged 24-year-old Derek James Blemke of Ishpeming with open murder. Blemke is accused of stabbing and killing 21-year-old Brandon Allen Lafavre of Marquette.

Police were dispatched to an apartment on the 2000 block of Wright Street around 1:45 a.m. on a report of a stabbing. When they arrived, officers found Lafavre already dead.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

MARQUETTE — A man was taken into custody after police located a deceased male victim.

Marquette Police Department arrived to the 2000 block of Wright Street in response to a report of a stabbing around 2 a.m. Friday.

When police arrived, a man was found already dead. Officers took another man into custody. A neighbor tells ABC 10 that there was a party last night outside of the apartment where the stabbing took place.

Marquette City Police were assisted at the scene by Northern Michigan University Public Safety, Michigan State Police, the MSP Crime Lab, Marquette City Fire Department, and UP Health System EMS.

No further details are available at this hour. The incident is under investigation and a forensics crime lab is on scene.
