MICHIGAMME — A former Northern Michigan University professor has his artwork currently on display at the Michigamme Moonshine Art Gallery.

John Hubbard, ‘Color and Light’ will be at the gallery through Aug. 15. Hubbard spent more than 40 years as an art professor.

He retired from NMU just a couple of years ago. Hubbard’s painting career started at the New York Art Students League in 1963. He specializes in paper-making and painting.

“He’s a fantastic landscaping painter. His colors are absolutely glowing,” said Friederike Roach of the Moonshine Art Gallery. “He spent 45 years teaching at Northern Michigan University where he influenced a lot of artists locally.”

“He taught me to relax and experiment a lot,” said Meegan Flannery. “He taught me what I know about color. His emphasis was to play around. You don’t have to be perfect. The best thing is to see what you can discover.”

Flannery was a student of Hubbard’s when she attended NMU. Her artwork will be on display at the gallery beginning Aug. 19.
