Four people arrested after police find active meth lab

ESCANABA — Four people are behind bars after police discovered an active meth lab inside an apartment.

Just after 11 a.m., Escanaba Public Safety was dispatched to an apartment building on the 1700 block of 3rd Avenue North on a report of an unusual odor coming from a residence. Officers detected a strong odor coming from the apartment when they made contact with one of the residents inside.

Police then heard a ‘purge’ sound and observed what they believe was an active meth lab. They evacuated all four people inside the apartment as well as other tenants in the building.

Two men and two women were taken into custody and lodged at the Delta County Jail on meth manufacturing related charges. The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team was called in to dismantle the meth lab and decontaminate four officers and the four arrested individuals who were exposed to the lab.

Names of the arrested individuals will be released after they’re arraigned in 94th District Court.
