Cross-country skiers hit the trails for Great Bear Chase

Calumet was the place to be this past weekend for the Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon. ABC 10 Keweenaw Bureau reporter Sam Ali was there for a complete recap of the event.

Great weather lead to a great crowd at the 2014 Great Bear Chase this past weekend. The race brought together professional and casual skiiers from all across the country to the Swedetown Trails in Calumet. Kathleen Morse, who has been skiing for over 30 years, says this race has one of the best trails in the entire country.

“I thought they were great. They were excellent,” she said. “This is one of my favorite ski races. I just love it and they just do a great job. I wish it wasn’t over. I wish I could keep going.”

More than 500 people took part in the race, including 12-year-old Mark Scheller from Minnesota. He says he knows he’s one of the youngest participants and although he liked his time, he still has a lot to learn.

“I feel like I have a lot of time to catch up and probably get better and see if I can get as good as I can at cross-country skiing,” he said.

And with temperatures above freezing for the first time in quite a while, the event made for a great hangout spot as well.
