It’s no surprise that Michigan Technological University student engineers are in high demand by technology companies that visit campus during Career Fair every year. MTEC SmartZone tenant companies have ready access to all of Michigan Tech’s facilities. “Jackson National Life Insurance Company, Dematic and ControlTec employ a large number of our students and work through Career Services to find the students they need,” said Jim Desrochers, Associate Director for Employer Relations at Michigan Tech. “We save companies time and money by scheduling interviews and meeting with students to determine the right candidates for their positions.
GE Aviation has received support from MTEC SmartZone since they opened their satellite office in 2005.
“MTEC SmartZone was one of the main contacts that helped coordinate a variety of efforts, from connecting with Michigan Tech and obtaining the students we needed, to providing the facilities necessary for us to get started,” said Jason Mack, GE’s University Development Center Manager. “Everyone worked together to help each other out.”
GE’s satellite office relies heavily on Career Fair for recruiting talented electrical, mechanical and computer engineering students. Students gain real project experience working on engineering design and development services for the aerospace industry. Projects include software development, verification and validation, mechanical and hardware design.
In addition to their active presence at Career Fair, MTEC SmartZone hosts a networking event for companies the evening of Career Fair and a breakfast the following morning. A tour of the business space follows, giving companies the opportunity to see first-hand how other companies are using technology and lab spaces, and growing successfully.
“We believe it’s important to build strong relationships with companies who recruit here, to find out exactly what they’re looking for in terms of students,” MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark said.
