2013 Pastyfest recap

The results are in and there’s a new Pastyfest champion.  ABC Ten’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen has the details.

 Despite chilly temperatures the 10th annual Pastyfest still drew a nice crowd to Calumet Saturday.

Event organizer Tom Tikkanen says, “The turnout has been really extraordinary.  Our vendors are much more numerous than in previous years.  It’s ten years now for Pastytfest and I think it’s becoming a local tradition. I also believe that we are getting some more out of town visitors.  It’s kind of gratifying knowing that the Copper County and people from elsewhere have been responding this way.”

At the Pasty Bake-off, Old School Baking Company took top honors for Cornish Style, and Connie’s Kitchen earned the Commercial Competition Trophy. Carmelita’s Southwestern Grille was awarded first place in the Non-Traditional Competition and Dan and Marsha Klein won their second-straight award for Traditional Pasty. The four pasty vendors combined to sell more than two-thousand pasties. Though the event has grown over the year, Tikkanen says it’s still all about the pasty.

“It came here with the Cornish.  It was adopted by virtually every group of people that encountered the pasty.  Over the century, they modified the recipe somewhat—it’s become much more diverse and yet we still have that core group who understand what a good Cornish pasty is.”
