Men walk in heels for sexual assault awareness

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and around one hundred people in Marquette showed their support by participating in “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”.  It took place at Northern Michigan University Tuesday night.

The event was sponsored by NMU’s Health Promotion Office and Public Safety Services, and The Women’s Center.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” is in its 10th year.  Men walk a mile high high heels to show their support for the cause.

There was a presentation by Kelly Laakso, a Sexual Assault Advocate for The Women’s Center.  She talked about sexual assault and domestic violence, as well as ways people can help victims.

Sexual assault and domestic violence are topics that do not get as much attention compared to other issues, because it often occurs in homes not in public.

The group of men and women, walked from NMU’s University Center to Third Street and back to total a mile.  After the mile long walk, men were treated to foot rubs by NMU’s Cosmetology Department.
