Walsh sinks MTU Men's B-Ball in OT

CANTON, Ohio – Four players scored in double figures for the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team in an 84-75 road overtime loss at Walsh Saturday (Dec. 1).

The two teams battled in the first half with neither squad leading by more than five. The Huskies erased an eight point lead late in the second half. Sophomore Ben Stelzer made a jump shot with 22 seconds remaining to lead by two. Junior Alex Culy missed a free throw following a Cavelier turnover. Davonte Beard tied the game with eight seconds remaining. Stelzer’s shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim as the game headed to overtime.

Walsh out-scored the Huskies 16-7 in the extra session for the win.

“It was a hard fought, tough, tough loss,” said coach Kevin Luke. “We made a heck of an effort to get back into it, including a defensive stop with 16 seconds remaining.”

Senior Ali Haidar had a double-double with a team-high 20 points and 22 rebounds. The
Windsor, Ont., native shot 7-of-18 from the field but was 6-of-12 from the free throw line.

Three others players scored in double figures for the Huskies. Junior Austin
Armga finished with 18, and junior Alex Culy had 17, including five 3-pointers. Sophomore Ben Stelzer chipped in 12.

Tech (3-2, 1-1) struggled at the free throw line shooting 53-percent (10-19). Walsh (5-0, 2-0) made all 20 free throw attempts.

Kenny Kornowski led five Cavaliers in double figures with a game-high 24.

Tech hosts Findlay Thursday (Dec. 6).
