Sex offender arrested in Wakefield

A sex offender has been caught rummaging through dumpsters at a school in Wakefield. Troopers from the Michigan State police at the Wakefield post received reports on November 20th of a man going through the dumpsters on the Wakefield Marenisco school campus. Troopers discovered it was a 64-year–old Wakefield man was a sex offender.

Police say the man was digging through the trash each week looking for notes and clothes of students. Troopers arrested the suspect at his home in Wakefield without incident on Wednesday.

He is being charged with Registered Sex Offender Loitering within a Student Safety Zone, a one–year misdemeanor. Authorities say a subsequent conviction is a two-year felony and carries a $2,000 fine. The suspect is lodged at the Gogebic County Jail, bond is set at $1,000.
