Tax debated at county board meeting

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners discussed the mining severance tax at a regularly scheduled board meeting Tuesday night.

Humboldt Township Supervisor Joe Derocha addressed the board about a meeting with Representative Steve Lindberg.  Lindberg is proposing two amendments to the tax bill.

The amendments would have Humboldt Township removed from the bill, and incorporate the County Boards position with all deductions removed.

Derocha, along with the County Commissioners, worry that the bill is being rushed.  They say lawmakers need to take a good look at who is impacted by the tax.

The County Commissioners’ main concern with the severance tax is that they’re not allowed to see figures on how the tax would impact Marquette County.  The tax would impact not only those in Marquette County, but the state of Michigan as well.
