Man arrested for stealing women's clothes

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department is investigate an odd series of thefts in the Witch Lake Area. Deputies say at least ten separate incidents have been reported in which female undergarments and swim wear were stolen.. The thefts occurred between July 17 and July 25.

In eight separate incidents, police say clothing items were taken from clothes lines at camps on Witch Lake. Officers believe two separate incidents involved clothing being removed from vehicles.

Deputies were able to identify a person of interest. Friday afternoon, July 27, a search warrant was served on the Republic Township residence of a 48 year old male, who is a registered sex offender. Evidence found during the search connected the suspect to at least ten separate reports of this stolen property. The Witch Lake man was arrested and lodged in the Marquette County Jail.

Deputies believe there may be other victims in the area. They are asking that anyone who has had clothing or other items stolen from their property – or missing from inside their homes or camps – to call Detective Lt. Stephen Kangas at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, 906-225-8470.

This investigation is on-going and additional charges may be pending.
