A kayaker from Kentucky was rescued Wednesday after being stranded on Grand Island due to high winds and unsafe paddling conditions.
58-year-old Craig Perdue was reported as missing by a member of his party to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Rangers at 4:32 Wednesday afternoon.
Perdue paddled to the east channel of the lake to a small beach surrounded by cliffs. Perdue said he sough refuge because he knew the conditions were too dangerous for him or his sea kayak to handle.
The Alger Country Sheriff’s Department sent out a boat and rescued Perdue a short time later. Two rangers from the parks service accompanied them. No one was injured.
