Benishek issues statement about jobs bill

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Labor’s May jobs report indicating that national unemployment has risen to 8.2 percent:

“Today’s poor jobs report again reminds us of the important need to grow our country’s economy. In Northern Michigan, unemployment is even higher than the national average of 8.2 percent. Job providers in the First District are telling me the federal government is standing in the way of them hiring.

For too long, Washington politicians have been trying to borrow and spend our way to economic prosperity. This approach has failed. President Obama told us that unemployment would not reach 8 percent if the stimulus bill was passed. Despite spending a trillion dollars, unemployment has been above 8 percent for an alarming 40 consecutive months.

I believe we need to try something different. Let’s listen to our business owners. Northern Michigan’s job providers are stressing the need for more economic stability and the desire for quality job training initiatives. Instead of relying on the federal government, we need to get the federal government out of the way by limiting overzealous regulations, reducing the national debt and keeping taxes low on our job providers.”
