Manistique Papers Looks for Buyer

Schoolcraft County may have just lost a major piece of its economic livelihood, but the area is not giving up.

Until recently, Manistique Papers made recycled–fiber paper products.

Earlier this month, MPI stopped production, closed its doors and filed for bankruptcy.

Company officials said it was because of shrinking demand, rising materials costs and an inability to obtain working capital.

Manistique City Manager Sheila Aldrich says city officials are helping the company in any way they can, and she says Michigan Works! and a local bank have also stepped in to help look for a buyer and to help the laid-off employees.

MPI had been in business since 1920.

It had been Schoolcraft County’s largest manufacturing employer, with about 150 employees.
