Stream & Drake Added to MTU Basketball Staff
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech head women’s basketball coach Kim Cameron today announced the hiring of Sarah Stream and Rae Drake to full-time assistant coaching positions effective immediately. Their addition gives women’s basketball three full-time staff for the first time in the program’s history.
“I’m thrilled with not only the fact we were able to expand our staff, but also that we were able to hire Sarah and Rae,” said Cameron. “They both bring different types of experience that will really help our program.”
Stream recently finished a six-year stint as a student-athlete in the women’s basketball program, where she scored 1,464 points and reset the school record for assists with 459. The four-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection started every one of her 126 games played and won 99 of those (78.7 percent). A native of Ishpeming, Mich., Stream gained a bachelor’s degree exercise science and is working on a master’s in integrative physiology while maintaining a 4.00 grade point average.
“I’m extremely excited to be an assistant coach at Michigan Tech,” said Stream. “It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’ve been around basketball my whole life, and I love Michigan Tech, the people and community. I look forward to working with Kim and Rae and learning as much as I can from them.”
Drake comes to the women’s basketball program after serving as a part-time assistant coach with the Tech men’s basketball program for the last five years. He was involved with scouting and player development. Prior to that, Drake coached Upper Peninsula high school boys basketball for 23 years—nine as head coach at West Iron County where he compiled a 121-72 record, seven conference championships and two district titles. He previously served 14 years as an assistant coach at Iron Mountain. Drake graduated from Northern Michigan in 1980 with a degree in special education.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Kim, Sarah and the women’s program,” said Drake. “I bring experience to the staff, and I think I can be helpful with strategy. At the same time, this is going to be an opportunity that will challenge and stretch me. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Michigan Tech is coming off the winningest season in school history. The Huskies amassed a 31-3 record, won the GLIAC North Division and Tournament tiles and claimed their second straight NCAA Midwest Regional championship.
“We are making an investment in our program by bringing on an additional full-time assistant,” said Michigan Tech athletic director Suzanne Sanregret. “Kim, Sarah and Rae all bring different strengths to the table, and I think they will compliment each other well and help our program continue its high level of success.”
Preseason practice for Michigan Tech women’s basketball begins Oct. 15.
