Tech\’s Gilkerson Earns Academic Honor

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech senior Ken Gilkerson was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV team. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native finished 10th in the 800-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in a school record time of 1:51.08. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering with a final cumulative GPA of 3.9. He will also be placed on the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-American selection.

“This is a great honor for Kenny,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “He not only worked really hard this season on the track but in the classroom as well.”

Gilkerson was the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selections to the district team that is chosen from all non-division I athletes from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

To be eligible for the district team student-athletes must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA and completed two semesters at the institution.
