Wildcats wrap up exhibition play against Finlandia

MARQUETTE — Exhibition games are where teams see what they have before the start of the regular season. They are most helpful for teams that need more time to get to know each other, similar to the Northern Michigan men’s soccer team. On Saturday, the Wildcats wrapped up the preseason with an impressive showing against Finlandia.

The two teams squared off at the NMU soccer fields. No official score was kept but those covering the game say the Wildcats won 5–0. Afterwards, head coach Dave Poggi talked about what he likes from his team at the moment.

“The energy is really good and that’s a really important part of what we’re about this first year. I think each time we go out, we learn something and that’s important in everything. Then we seem to work on it in the week and we start to see little steps that we’re making forward,” Poggi said.

Coach Poggi added that the team is not a finished product yet and there are some things they need to perfect as they get set for the regular season in just a few days.

“I think if we just keep ourselves focused on making gains every day, and staying active and if they buy into that for the regular season as well, I think by the end of September we will know a lot more about how we’re going to be,” said Poggi.

The Wildcats will open the season on the road this upcoming Sunday at Missouri Saint Louis.
