Wildcats sweep Lakers at Taffy Abel

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Six different Wildcats recorded points as the Northern Michigan University hockey team picked up its second shutout of the season, 3-0 over Lake Superior State Saturday.

The Wildcats notched their second series sweep of the season and took a 2-0 advantage in the Cappo Cup series.

NMU remained undefeated on the campaign improving to 4-0 with a 2-0 record in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action. The Lakers fell to 0-8 with an 0-4 league mark.

“Obviously we are really happy with the weekend. We are trying to keep the mentality that we are off to a really good start but it is only a start. We have some strong leadership on the team and they aren’t going to let us get caught up in it,” said NMU head coach Walt Kyle.

Sophomore forward Shane Sooth put the Wildcats on the board just 40-seconds into the second period on an assist from freshman Robbie Payne.

Sophomore forward John Siemer tacked on an insurance goal 1:36 into the third period on a feed from junior forward Darren Nowick.

Junior forward Joseph Manno scored his first goal in a Wildcat jersey when he finished a goal served up by sophomore forward Gerard Hanson at the 13:06 mark of the third period.

Sophomore goalie Mathias Dahlstrom recorded his fifth career shutout making 23 saves in net for the Wildcats improving his season record to 4-0.

“I thought we played much better tonight than we did last night. We still had some chances we didn’t convert, but we were resilient and we were able to eventually convert some of those chances into goals. I am pleased with the effort and character of this team,” said Kyle.

NMU outshot Lake Superior State 36-23 including a 15-8 advantage in the third period. NMU was 0-2 on the power play while holding the Lakers to 0-3 on their man-advantage. The Wildcats held LSSU to just two shots on their three power play opportunities.

Hanson, Siemer and Payne led the Wildcats with five shots each while Garret Clemment had five shots for the Lakers.

The Wildcats open the home portion of their schedule when they host Alabama-Huntsville in a non conference series next Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. (ET) both nights.
