U.P. roadside parks opening late this year
MDOT Fast Facts:
– The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) owns and maintains 32 roadside parks in the Upper Peninsula.
– U.P. roadside parks usually open in mid- to late April each year.
– Opening of U.P. roadside parks was delayed this year due to a combination of heavy snow, frozen conditions, and high water.
May 6, 2013 — Starting today, most of MDOT’s Upper Peninsula roadside parks will be reopening. Others will remain closed until remaining snow melts, facilities thaw, and high water recedes.
“We always try to reopen roadside parks early in the spring whenever possible,” said MDOT Superior Region Associate Engineer for Operations Jack Bedard. “This year winter hung on later than usual, so we’ve had to keep some of the parks closed a bit longer.”
Most roadside parks will reopen today. Parks scheduled to reopen on May 13 include:
– Kiva Roadside Park on US-41 in Alger County.
– AuTrain Roadside Park on M-28 in Alger County.
– Deer Lake Roadside Park on M-28 in Alger County.
– Scott Falls Roadside Park on M-28 in Alger County.
– Grand Island Roadside Park on M-28 in Alger County.
– Old Flowing Well Roadside Park on M-28 in Luce County.
– Esrey Roadside Park on M-26 in Keweenaw County.
– Hebard Roadside Park on M-26 in Keweenaw County
– Snow Gauge Roadside Park on US-41 in Keweenaw County.
