Tech tennis duo falls in two tourney matches

SUMTER, S.C. — Michigan Tech’s Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic suffered their first two losses of the season as a doubles pair today at the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships. The Huskies were the first doubles team in school history to play at the nationals.

Suthijindawong and Cvetanovic, who entered the eight-team tournament unseeded, lost to the No. 3 seeded pair from Barry 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round.

In the second round, Tech’s duo won the opening set 7-5 before falling 6-2 in the second. A super tiebreaker was played in lieu of a full third set, and the pair from California (PA) came away with a 10-8 triumph.

“We didn’t have our best tennis today,” said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. “The competition is obviously very good here, and when you have an off day, you’re going to have a tough time.”

Suthijindawong and Cvetanovic will play their final match at the event tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they square off against a team from St. Mary’s (Texas) in the seventh place match.
