Michigan Tech wins at rival Lake State

SAULT STE. MARIE — Michigan Tech shook off a cold start for a 72-61 victory over Lake Superior State today in GLIAC women’s basketball. The No. 8-ranked Huskies got 20 points from Kelli Guy to improve to 23-2 overall and 19-2 in league play.

Tech made just 9-of-36 field goals (25 percent) in the opening half, finding itself down by as many as eight. It was 23-15 at the final media timeout and 25-17 with 90 seconds to go before Guy scored five straight points. She hit a jumper at the foul line with 1:27 on the clock, then swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 25-22 margin at the break.

The Huskies turned it around in the second half, shooting 71 percent including 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

Guy hit four treys in the first six minutes of the half to help turn the three-point deficit into a five-point lead (42-37). Emily Harrison came off the bench midway through the half and made four baskets in a three-minute span to push the gap to 14 with eight minutes to play. It would stay a double-digit margin the rest of the way.

“It took us a while to get going,” said Tech coach Kim Cameron. “Kelli gave us a huge lift with the shot at the end of the first half and the stretch early in the second. We were able to get the ball inside too, and that opened things up outside.”

Four Huskies scored in double figures led by Guy’s fourth 20-point game of the season. Danielle Blake added 13 points, seven points and five assists. Morgan Anderson and Jillian Ritchie had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The teams had 35 rebounds apiece. Tech had 23 assists with just seven turnovers. The Lakers had 10 assists with 12 turnovers.

LSSU (7-18, 3-18 GLIAC) finished at 45 percent from the field.

With a Wayne State loss at Walsh, Michigan Tech has clinched home court advantage throughout the GLIAC Tournament.

Michigan Tech will wrap up its 2014-15 regular season next Thursday (Feb. 26) at rival Northern Michigan. Tipoff is set for 5:35 p.m.
