Maschmeyer leads NMU past Huntsville

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sophomore defenseman Brock Maschmeyer scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 4-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville in non-conference action Saturday at the Berry Events Center.

The Wildcats remain undefeated on the campaign with a 5-0-1 record while the Chargers fell to 0-6-1 on the season.

“I was really proud of the leadership and our ability to get focused. I thought Mathias played well in the first and they came at us pretty hard,” said NMU head coach Walt Kyle. “But then I thought after the first we got our feet under us and it was pretty lopsided.”

Senior forward Reed Seckel fired back in a rebound with assists from sophomore forwards Dominik Shine and Shane Sooth to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage at the 8:05 mark of the first period.

Maschmeyer then scored his first goal of the night at the 2:59 mark of the second when he took a pass in the high slot from junior forward Joseph Manno and freshman forward Robbie Payne to beat the keeper to the far post, slipping it in underneath his pad.

UAH took advantage of a power play to go on the scoreboard at the 16:09 mark of the second. Brennan Saulnier scored on assists from Josh Kestner and Brandon Carlson.

Maschmeyer then teamed up with Shine and Sooth to score an insurance goal for the Wildcats at the 5:18 mark of the third.

Sophomore Gerard Hanson banged in the final goal for the Wildcats on assists from junior Darren Nowick and freshman Zach Diamantoni at the 9:20 mark of the third period.

NMU outshot the Chargers 41-23 including a margin of 20-1 in the final frame. Shine led the Wildcats with six shots while Hanson had five.

Sophomore goalie Mathias Dahlstrom made 22 saves in net for NMU including 14 in the opening period.

NMU returns to the Berry Events Center in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend when they face Ferris State in a two-game set. Puck drop both nights is set for 7:07 p.m.
