Lots of Early Deer Season Action

With the weekend kickoff of firearm season, many hunters were waiting until today to bring in the bucks they bagged.

The Marquette DNR office was seeing plenty of activity at the deer check station.

By early afternoon, 35 hunters had come by to report their catch and help the agency keep tabs on the deer population.

DNR staff say they’re pleased with those numbers, and all indications are the herd says the herd is very healthy.

The most recent forecasts were that deer sightings would be down this year.

It’s too soon to tell with any certainty.

However, DNR wildlife biologist Brian Roell says that from what hunters are reporting to him at the check station, it won’t turn out that way.

He says most are telling him they’re seeing about the same frequency of sightings as a year ago.

Even the end of the month won’t be the last chance to bag a buck, with the archery and muzzleloading seasons still running in December.
