Gogebic CC May Start Offering 4-Year Degree

In the near future, Gogebic Community College in Ironwood may be able to start giving out a specific kind of 4-year degree.

That’s if the state’s community colleges get their way.

A bill in the state House right now would allow community colleges to offer what’s called an Applied Bachelor’s degree.

The degrees would be for technical or vocational programs, as well as applied programs like nursing.

The bill is being reviewed by a House committee, but Governor Jennifer Granholm has said she’d sign it if it goes to her desk.

12 community colleges across the state have said they’re interested in the Applied Bachelor’s degrees, and Gogebic is one of them.

The school wouldn’t be able to award Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees, which the overwhelming majority of 4-year degrees are.
